Biography

Originally from Iowa, I have been working as an artist in New York City since 1985. Since completing my Masters Degree at Brooklyn College, I have been exhibiting my work at a variety of galleries, while working as a professional fine art lithographer. In addition, I have also been a visiting artist at Columbia University and the New School, and completed a residency at the Ragdale Foundation in June of 2001. I co-founded and curated exhibits at the former Cold Fish Art Space in Brooklyn, and was the artist liaison/Muse Fuse coordinator in 2001-2002 for NURTUREart Non-Profit Inc. In 2003 I joined the faculty at Brooklyn College where I am teaching printmaking

Statement

I make graphite drawings, paintings, and wire sculpture. Recently, a simple leaf which I discovered near my studio became a catalyst for a new visual idea. Utilizing the leaf's parallel pattern of veins, I made a drawing of a skeletal structure that is sculptural. The linear concept was then convincingly rendered creating a three dimensional space. Additional resource materials for my work have included architecture, such as the Sillustani funerary towers (chullpas) of Peru, and animals I encountered during a trip to the Galapagos Islands. Overall, these images continue to cross-reference each other producing variations or hybrids. The foundation of my work, however, remains improvisational.
